One wonders what it will take for municipal governments throughout the Southland to resolve their current budget crunches.

It is unfortunate that so much time is wasted in selecting new leaders in city management for a troubled community fighting back from the brink of bankruptcy. The local newspapers need to report on the magnitude of the crisis. If the city is losing money, the treasurer must look for ways to invest the city's revenue properly. The City of Hermosa Beach has reserved great wealth, yet they residents of that community are debating whether the current treasurer should be allowed to stay on for another term because of his choice to allow city monies to remain in low-yielding investments.

A representative from Canada suggested that the Hermosa Beach City Council house the municipal funds in a Canadian Bank, as they are among the most sound and solid in the world.

How much does the city allocate to public works? Is the city managing its pension system properly? If a dedicated team of people were willing, I am sure that current officials in power could find ways to draw down the liabilities impinging on the city without limiting core services or alienating public employees.
