Good afternoon,

Thank you for your response.  Supervisor Hahn shares your deep concern about what happened in South Whittier.  She was at the scene of the tragedy the morning that it occurred, and she continues to closely follow the ongoing investigation.  The driver being released actually has nothing to do with the DA or bail because he has not yet been charged with a crime.  The investigation is still ongoing and the Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol have not yet presented their evidence to the DA in order for the DA to charge the individual.  The driver was detained for questioning, but by law, individuals must be released after 48 hours if there is no charge.

We have been assured that both the Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol are taking this very seriously and are still conducting their investigation.  Once they reach a conclusion, they will present their evidence to the DA for filing.  Supervisor Hahn continues to pray for the recruits who were injured while placing her trust in our law enforcement partners to conduct a thorough investigation and present the evidence to the DA when it is time.

In service,

Subject: Re: Janice Journal: Addressing This Week's Tragedy in South Whittier

This is more than a tragedy, Supervisor.

This is outright criminal, even if the results from the investigation suggest outrageous recklessness or negligence, as opposed to pre-meditated murder.

I am beyond shocked that the suspect involved in this crash was released without bail, without any remonstrance!

Why is the LA County Board of Supervisors standing by and doing nothing about this?
