City attorneys represent the needs of the voters and the legal necessities of the city. Like many city governments across the country, it would appear that these city officials take on responsibilities which rival the the capacities of federal officials. At least that would seem to be the case in Redondo Beach, where the City Council has just approved a 25% pay increase.
The pay-raise to Redondo Beach City Attorney is not acceptable. No one has any right to command a salary that rivals state and national figures occupying a similar position of responsibility.
The Redondo Beach city manager two years ago voluntarily agreed to a pay cut. The City of Redondo Beach ought to do away with the office of city attorney altogether. City governments should not be costing the taxpayers, nor should they be created in order to benefit a few politicians willing to take on positions beneath the voters' interest.
