Rick Santorum did the GOP a huge favor – he was the most
conservative alternative to muster a meaningful opposition to a weak
front-runner. Romney’s healthcare mandate was a whale of an albatross around
the former governor’s neck, one which would have derailed his candidacy if a
stronger challenger had emerged earlier in the campaign.
Romney’s skill with organization, programming, and punditry
may be just enough to score future victory for this technocrat. Perhaps we do
not need a red-blooded statesman in the White House. Perhaps a Mormon with
quiet adherence to principle and quiescence in the face of crises is just what
we need.
Anything in November would be better than Barack Obama. The
hope and change that this country was hoping for will be realized when the
Chicago city organizer gets sent back to the South Side.
